Salt spray testing is a core accelerated testing method for assessing the corrosion resistance of metal fasteners. The industry often focuses on the conversion relationship between neutral salt spray duration and natural rusting cycles. Furthermore, factors such as salt solution ratio, temperature, and humidity directly alter the corrosion rate. Test results serve as a core basis for optimizing the Self-Clinching Stud anti-corrosion coating process. The critical relative humidity for metal corrosion is approximately 70%. Exceeding this humidity level causes salt to form a conductive electrolyte. For every 10°C increase in temperature, the corrosion rate increases by 2 to 3 times. The standard test temperature for neutral salt spray is fixed at 35°C to standardize testing for various fasteners.

Salt solution concentration, sample placement angle, and solution pH value are the three key variables affecting the salt spray corrosion rate. Strict parameter specification is necessary before testing to objectively evaluate the protective effect of the Threaded Clinching Screw coating. When the salt concentration is below 5%, the corrosion rate of steel and brass substrates increases with increasing concentration. Above 5%, oxygen saturation occurs, and the corrosion rate decreases. The pH of the neutral salt spray solution needs to be maintained consistently between 6.5 and 7.2. Flat samples must be placed at a 30° angle to the vertical plane to avoid salt spray accumulation, causing localized corrosion distortion, and ensuring the test data has a comparative reference value.
The salt spray testing equipment uses a spray tower method to generate a fine salt spray, with two modes: continuous spray and periodic alternating spray. Both spray processes are suitable for durability verification of Self-Clinching Mounting Screws under different operating conditions. Fine salt spray particles adsorb more oxygen and are more corrosive. Constant continuous spray is used for basic corrosion protection rating, while alternating spray simulates outdoor wet and dry environments, accelerating the corrosion process and better reflecting the actual usage scenarios of components. The standard temperature control of the equipment is 35±2℃ for the test chamber and 47±2℃ for the saturation tower, with temperature and humidity controlled throughout the process to avoid environmental interference with the test results.
Three industry-standard salt spray result assessment methods are used to meet different testing needs and accurately quantify the corrosion resistance performance of Self-Clinching Threaded Fasteners. The rating method classifies protection levels based on the percentage of corroded area, suitable for flat fasteners; the corrosion product observation method visually distinguishes between white rust and red rust. White rust is a corrosion product of the zinc plating, indicating only plating damage, while red rust indicates that the substrate has corroded and failed; the weighing method calculates the corrosion rate by the weight difference before and after corrosion, and is often used for comparing the corrosion resistance of the substrate itself.
Artificially accelerated salt spray has a mature conversion logic for natural environments, allowing for rapid prediction of the long-term outdoor rust prevention period of Self-Clinching Screws. 24 hours of neutral salt spray is equivalent to 1 year of natural outdoor corrosion, 24 hours of acetic acid spray is equivalent to 3 years, and copper-accelerated acetic acid spray has the highest corrosion intensity, equivalent to 8 years of outdoor corrosion in 24 hours. Based on this conversion standard, engineers can quickly select suitable fastener coating solutions for outdoor and coastal environments through short-term in-chamber testing, without needing years of outdoor exposure testing.
The coating process is a core factor determining the salt spray resistance of 304 Stainless Steel Self-Clinching Screws. For small, thin-walled press-fit studs, a corrosion-resistant coating appropriate for the thread precision is preferred. Coating thickness, chromate conversion film, and sealing treatment directly determine rust prevention. For small press-fit parts, zinc-nickel plating is recommended, balancing thread assembly precision with hundreds of hours of salt spray resistance. For large, high-strength fasteners, zinc-aluminum composite coatings can be used, offering even higher corrosion resistance. Combined with a sealing treatment, this stabilizes the thread friction coefficient, reducing assembly jamming and rust-induced seizures.

Based on the aforementioned salt spray corrosion testing standards and corrosion prevention process logic, our independently developed and manufactured Self-Clinching Studs cover a variety of substrates and corrosion-resistant coating solutions. Coating processes can be customized for different usage environments, such as coastal areas, outdoor environments, and humid workshops. Passing rigorous salt spray testing, they balance assembly precision and long-term rust prevention, suitable for various installation scenarios, including thin sheet metal, electrical equipment, and outdoor machinery, perfectly solving various sheet metal connection corrosion problems.
