Products introduction
End Mill Cutters are cutting tools made from tungsten steel (hard alloy, also known as tungsten-titanium alloy). They are generally used in CNC machining centers and CNC engraving machines. They can also be installed on conventional milling machines to process relatively hard, less complex, heat-treated materials. Tungsten carbide milling cutters are widely used and are suitable for high-speed machining. With a hardness of 10K Vickers, second only to diamond, tungsten carbide milling cutters are resistant to wear and are brittle and hard, making them resistant to annealing.
Tungsten Carbide Properties and Advantages
Excellent Hardness and Wear Resistance: The most striking feature of tungsten carbide is its extremely high hardness. Its Mohs hardness typically ranges from 8.5 to 9.0, significantly higher than stainless steel and titanium. This hardness is why it is often used in cutting tools such as Chamfer End Mill and wear-resistant components.
Heat Resistance: Tungsten carbide maintains its structural integrity and hardness even in extremely hot environments. It can withstand sustained operating temperatures of approximately 800–1000°C (1472–1832°F), significantly outperforming standard steel tools. This makes it ideal for applications like Center Cutting End Mill, where high-temperature resistance is crucial.
Corrosion and Oxidation Resistance: Tungsten carbide offers excellent resistance to corrosion and oxidation. This corrosion resistance stems from its chemical stability, even in harsh or corrosive environments. This property is particularly beneficial for tools like Square End Mill that are often exposed to various chemicals and fluids.
Density and Impact Resistance: A unique property of tungsten carbide is its high density (approximately 15.6 g/cm³), significantly higher than steel (~7.85 g/cm³) or titanium (~4.5 g/cm³). This density translates to excellent shock and vibration absorption, making it suitable for tools such as Ceramic End Mill that require high impact resistance.

Machinability Challenges and Solutions
Despite its many advantages, tungsten carbide remains difficult to machine due to its hardness and brittleness. Early in my career, I underestimated these challenges and quickly learned the importance of specialized Chamfer End Mills and machining techniques.
The key lies in using diamond-coated or high-quality carbide tools, proper cooling, and optimized cutting parameters. I've found that following these practices helps achieve excellent results while reducing the risk of damaging the carbide or the Center Cutting End Mill itself.
In summary, tungsten carbide's combination of hardness, heat resistance, corrosion resistance, and impact resistance makes it an indispensable material for demanding manufacturing environments. While challenging to work with, understanding these properties allows manufacturers like me to fully utilize tungsten carbide's potential, resulting in better Square End Mills and increased efficiency.
